What Is Career Management and What Are Its Practices?

The career journey, which holds great importance today, is shaped by the combination of many different factors. By properly managing numerous elements such as personal goals, skills, the education received and the preferred field of work, it becomes possible to establish solid career plans.

What Is Career Management?

Career management is a process that enables employees to demonstrate the necessary effort and motivation to advance to their next position after completing the duties assigned to them with high-level performance. The employee carries out this process together with the human resources manager. Within this process, putting into action the plans for the positions employees envision for the future, and shaping these plans so that they contribute to the company's development, constitutes the answer to the question of what career management is. The career management process is effectively coordinated through various steps such as defining career paths, clarifying career opportunities, providing employees with guiding experience transfer in the field of their career, and offering training and consultancy.

Individual career management can be defined as the individual's establishment of the necessary foundations, the planning and implementation of their strategies, and their work motivation in order to achieve their future goals related to their working life. In line with their expectations and abilities, individuals should make the career planning most suitable for themselves and manage this process in the best possible way.

What Are the Practices of Career Management?

In professional life, there are steps that must be followed in the area of career management practices for a successful career. These practices can be listed as follows:

• First of all, employees should set development goals for themselves. Ensuring that these goals are achieved is among the fundamental duties of employers. Employers should evaluate the performance of all their employees and create various infrastructures to enable them to develop themselves. Monitoring the career development of employees and ensuring its realization is the responsibility of all employers.
• The individual career goals of employees should serve the same purpose as the organization they work for. As the career advances, the organization should also be benefiting from this in the most effective manner.
• Employers should make plans regarding the current and future positions of their employees and guide their employees on this matter. The best answer to the question of what the practices of career management are will be not to impose specific tasks on employees, but to determine the tasks suitable for each employee and to ensure that the most productive positions are identified in line with their abilities.
• When the career plans of employees are being made, the aim is to increase the organization's success. For both individual and corporate interests, managers must carry out effective career management planning and guide employees.

How Does the Career Management Process Work?

First of all, when the career management process is being initiated, goals specific to each employee must be defined. Rather than the tasks to be performed becoming standardized, bringing the employee into a suitable form increases the productivity to be obtained. It is the responsibility of managers to find personnel suited to the prepared job descriptions and to create an environment in which these personnel can demonstrate their abilities. After the necessary conditions have been created, the envisioned career plans must be presented in order to ensure the motivation of employees. There is a noticeable increase in the work determination of an employee who knows they will advance within the organization in the future.
